An exceptional and incomparable-specialty licensed hospital
Serving all 92 counties in the state,
A Rosie Place for Children is Indiana's only licensed, not-for-profit, specialty hospital dedicated exclusively to serving the growing number of families with
children who are medically fragile and require a skilled level of care to meet their everyday needs. Located in South Bend, Indiana, on five lovely acres, accommodations here are bright, airy, and cozy with a focus on nature. A Rosie Place for Children is a place where kids may feel at home and develop relationships while participating in unique activities.
What is medically fragile?
A child who is medically fragile requires daily care from specially trained caregivers (in addition to typical parenting). To sustain or improve their lives, medically fragile children require therapies and/or specialized high-tech medical equipment (such as G-tubes, ventilators, apnea monitors, and suction machines).
Medically fragile conditions include (but are not limited to) premature birth, brain injury, uncontrolled seizure disorder, cancer, spina bifida, surgery complications, chronic lung or heart disease, swallowing disorders or specialized feeding issues, neuromuscular disease, or other chronic health conditions such as diabetes and asthma that require specialized care that an untrained caregiver cannot provide.
Challenges in providing education for medically fragile children and respective solutions
Challenge 1: Frequent absences from school
These children often find themselves in a hospital or confined to their homes due to their medical conditions, resulting in a significant disruption to their regular schooling. Health-related absences can lead to academic setbacks and impede their overall educational progress.
Solution 1: Collaboration through whiteboard
To address this challenge effectively, the implementation of a tailored solution is essential.
NearHub Board, with its advanced capabilities and interactive digital tools, offers a comprehensive approach to this issue. Nearhub Board leverages
video conferencing, and smart whiteboards with infinite writing canvases to facilitate real-time collaboration between students and teachers, enabling students to actively participate in their lessons from the comfort of their hospital beds or homes. Moreover, even without a NearHub in the hospital, remote students can collaborate on the whiteboard simply by using their phones, tablets, or computers.
The smart whiteboard offers a dynamic and inclusive virtual classroom environment where medically fragile children can attend classes, join the whiteboard, engage in discussions, and collaborate on assignments with their peers. This not only ensures that they do not miss essential lessons but also ensures that their teachers can keep track of their performance and make sure these children are doing as well as if they were in the classroom.
Challenge 2: Lack of motivation and engagement
Medically fragile children often encounter challenges in staying motivated and engaged in their learning due to extended hospital stays and medical procedures. They may get feelings of boredom and disconnection from the educational process. Additionally, frequent medical procedures may lead to anxiety and stress, which can hinder their ability to focus and engage in educational activities.
Solution 2: Sparking enthusiasm through gamification
To address the challenge of limited fun and engagement in the hospital, Nearhub offers a compelling solution by introducing gamification. Through NearHubOS, children can access a diverse range of interactive games, including Hangman, Pictionary, Sudoku, Chess, Kahoot, ABC Mouse, and many more from the Google Store. What's even more impressive is how our whiteboard seamlessly integrates with cutting-edge technologies, including virtual reality headsets and Midjourney, enhancing the interactive and immersive learning experience.
The gamification experience not only addresses the issue of monotony but also fosters a sense of excitement and motivation. Children can choose games that align with their interests and skill levels, ensuring a personalized and engaging experience. By introducing gamification into the hospital setting, Nearhub redefines the concept of fun and play, making sure that medically fragile children can enjoy moments of joy, growth, and connection during their extended stays.
Challenge 3: Physical and cognitive limitations
Medically fragile children often face physical and cognitive limitations due to their health conditions. They may struggle with fine motor skills, making it difficult to write or manipulate physical learning materials. Additionally, cognitive impairments can affect their capacity to grasp complex concepts and retain information.
Solution 3: Touchscreen and accessibility features
The NearHub Board features an interactive touchscreen interface that eliminates the need for traditional writing and fine motor skills. Its touch-based interface allows children to simply use their fingers to interact with digital content instead of requiring the use of pens or other tools. This makes the learning process more accessible for those with motor impairments.
Besides, NearHub Board is equipped with accessibility features, such as adjustable text size and contrast settings. Medically fragile children can modify the display to suit their individual needs, ensuring that complex concepts are presented in a more understandable manner. This enhances their capacity to grasp ideas and retain information, making learning more effective and inclusive.
Challenge 4: Difficulty in Maintaining Social Connections
Extended hospital stays, limited mobility, and isolation can result in a lack of social connections with their peers, leading to feelings of loneliness, sadness, and a sense of detachment from the outside world. The absence of regular social interactions may result in feelings of anxiety, depression, and a negative impact on their overall psychological health.
Solution 4: Virtual Social Interaction with NearHub
NearHub's interactive platform offers a range of features designed to facilitate virtual social interaction and collaboration among students. It includes video conferencing capabilities for virtual meetings, shared screens for presentations, image and video sharing for enhanced communication, and synchronized activities on the smart whiteboard. With these tools, children can engage in collaborative learning, interact with classmates, and work together on various tasks, such as drawing, brainstorming, and completing assignments.
This comprehensive approach ensures that children can maintain social connections while benefiting from a supportive and engaging educational experience. By fostering social interactions and creating a sense of togetherness, NearHub Board helps mitigate the psychological effects of isolation, promoting a healthier and more positive mental state for these children.
Conclusion
In summary, the integration of NearHub Board at A Rosie Place for Children has been a game-changer in addressing the educational challenges of medically fragile children. It has effectively tackled issues like health-related absences, motivation, physical and cognitive limitations, and social connections. Gamification, touchscreen features, and accessibility adjustments have not only made education more accessible but also boosted enthusiasm and engagement. With NearHub's virtual social interaction, these children can stay connected and experience togetherness.
